On Tuesday 3 November Heiwit is taking part in Federare le CER, the first meeting of the IFEC working group dedicated to the federation of Renewable Energy Communities, grid flexibility and new energy services. The meeting is promoted by CER IN RETE as part of the IFEC working groups coordinated by the Energy Center of the Politecnico di Torino and is being held at the headquarters of the Consiglio Regionale della Lombardia.

Heiwit’s CEO is speaking in Session 3 – Data, platforms, skills and service models (12:20–13:10), moderated by Francesco Meneghetti (Energeea), alongside Giulio Troncarelli (Eot) and Valerio Covicchio (WHES).

What will be discussed

The working group was set up to help CERs move beyond the single-community stage: federated configurations that are more robust economically and organisationally, able to deliver advanced energy services (energy storage, demand response, flexibility) and to retain a growing share of the value generated within the local area.

The programme combines institutional greetings, a keynote by Sergio Olivero (Energy Center PoliTO, coordinator of the IFEC working groups for CERs) on data and markets, three thematic sessions and a closing round table with CNEL, ENEA, Energy Center PoliTO and Fondazione Siegra. The proceedings are chaired by Maurizio Melis, journalist at Radio 24.

Heiwit’s contribution

Our talk starts from a simple question: what happens to a CER’s shared energy when producers’ batteries stop thinking only about their own home and start thinking about the community?

Today, a residential battery storage system works in self-consumption mode: it charges as soon as there is a solar surplus, usually mid-morning, and is full before midday. The rest of the production is fed into the grid at times when the other CER members are drawing less. In the evening, when the community’s consumption is at its peak, the battery serves only the home it is installed in.

AI-Care, Heiwit’s energy management platform that currently orchestrates a fleet of several hundred sodium-ion battery storage systems, can reverse this logic: receiving the aggregated consumption of the CER’s consuming members, deciding hour by hour how much to store and when to release it, and shaping grid feed-in to match the community’s consumption profile. The result is more shared energy, and therefore more incentive, with the same system and the same battery.

In Milan we will demonstrate this with an animated simulation of a typical day: the same system, first in self-consumption mode and then with AI-Care, and the shared energy counter changing. The simulation is published on this website, together with a technical article on the mechanism and the assumptions used.

Why the working group matters to us

Heiwit manufactures sodium-ion battery storage systems and hybrid inverters for the residential and SME market, sold through a network of certified installers. Sodium chemistry, free of lithium and cobalt and able to discharge between −25 and +60 °C, is suited to places where lithium storage imposes constraints: schools, nurseries, social care facilities, public buildings. These are exactly the parties the IFEC working group wants to place at the heart of federated CERs.

CERs have the consumption data; distributed batteries have the ability to respond. Bringing the two together is a platform problem, not a hardware one. This is the topic we want to discuss with institutions, communities, universities and operators, and for which we are proposing a pilot CER to the working group.
