AI-Care is your battery's autopilot. Every day it prepares an hour-by-hour schedule, sends it to the inverter as commands and adjusts it as the day goes on. It has one precise aim: to make you buy less energy from the grid and to sell the surplus at the time when you no longer need it.
- In the evening and at night the home uses the energy stored in the battery.
- In the morning, before the sun comes up, any energy left over is sold to the grid.
- During the day the solar PV system recharges the battery for the evening.
A day with AI-Care
This is how the battery charge moves over a sunny day.
1. Evening and night: the home runs on the battery
From sunset onwards, the home uses the energy stored during the day. AI-Care does not sell it: it keeps it for your consumption until the morning.
2. Before sunrise: the surplus is sold
Once the night is over, AI-Care knows how much energy is left. If there is more than is needed until the sun comes up, the excess is sold to the grid. If the battery is already empty, it sells nothing.
3. Morning: the sun recharges
The solar PV system covers the home's consumption and any surplus goes into the battery first. In the first hours of sunshine, selling may continue for a little while if there is still surplus energy.
4. Afternoon: battery full, the rest to the grid
Once the battery is full, the surplus energy produced by the roof goes to the grid, just as the system would do without AI-Care. At sunset, it all starts again from step 1.
Indicative example. Timings change with the seasons and the weather: in summer the sun comes up earlier and the sale moves towards dawn; in winter, later. You can see what actually happens on your system in the ‘Decisioni AI’ tab of the AI-Care app.
Why it sells in the morning and not in the evening
Buying a kWh from the grid costs much more than you earn by selling one. That is why the most expensive mistake is selling energy that you then have to buy back.
If the battery's energy were sold in the evening
It is sold at 19:00, but the night is long and consumption is not known in advance: one evening with the washing machine or the oven on is all it takes to run the battery down and end up buying energy from the grid until morning.
With AI-Care
At night the home uses the battery. In the morning, the night's consumption is already behind you and only what is genuinely left over is sold. Straight afterwards, the sun recharges the battery for the evening.
How it decides
AI-Care combines four pieces of information.
- The weather. The solar forecast for your roof, hour by hour, updated several times a day.
- Energy prices. Hourly electricity market prices, published every day for the following day, and the selling price for your area.
- Your household's habits. How much energy you use in each hour, worked out from the last four weeks and different for each day of the week.
- Your system. How charged the battery is right now and how much your roof is actually producing compared with the forecast.
Every evening it prepares tomorrow's schedule
As soon as the next day's prices are published, AI-Care decides hour by hour when the home will use the battery, when the battery will recharge and how much energy to sell in the morning.
Every hour it checks it again
The schedule is recalculated with the battery's actual charge and the latest forecasts, even at night. If you have used more than usual or the sky has clouded over, the rest of the day adjusts accordingly.
Every quarter of an hour it talks to the inverter
It checks that the inverter is doing what the schedule says and, if necessary, sends it the right command: use the battery for the home or sell to the grid.
The rules it always follows
- It does not sell in the evening. The battery's energy is there for your home until the morning. The only exception is Vacanza mode, when the home is empty.
- In bad weather it holds back. If the forecast says the day's sun will not be enough to cover consumption, the battery is not emptied in the morning: you will need that energy.
- It respects your minimum threshold. It does not sell the battery's energy when the charge falls below the safety threshold you have chosen in Impostazioni, plus a small extra margin. For household consumption, the battery is used normally.
- It does not charge the battery from the grid. AI-Care does not buy energy to fill the battery: it only decides how to use the energy you have.
- It stops if something goes wrong. If the inverter does not respond to commands, AI-Care pauses itself and tries again later. The inverter and grid protections always remain those set by your installer.
- Everything is visible. Every schedule and every command sent to the inverter is logged in the ‘Decisioni AI’ tab.
Other features
Vacanza mode
When you are away, the home uses little energy. Enter the dates, or every weekend or certain fixed days: on those days AI-Care sells the energy you do not need during the hours when the forecast price is highest, including in the evening. If for a few days it notices consumption much lower than usual, it suggests that you activate it: the decision is yours.
Overvoltage derating
In some areas, during the sunny hours, the grid voltage rises too high and the inverter disconnects for safety. If you activate this feature, when the voltage rises the power you export to the grid is reduced, to lower the risk of disconnection. It also works without AI-Care and is only useful if your system exports energy to the grid.
Charging at peak production
Optional feature, off by default. After the morning sale, the battery waits before recharging: the energy from the first hours of sunshine goes to the grid and charging starts in the middle of the day, when the roof produces the most and energy on the grid is worth the least. The restart time is chosen each day based on the weather so that the battery is still full by the evening. The full explanation is in the guide Charging at peak production.
Impostazioni
In the ‘Stato AI Care’ tab you choose the battery's minimum safety threshold, you can suspend AI-Care for 1, 3, 12 or 24 hours and you can switch it off or back on with the toggle. When you suspend it or switch it off, the inverter goes back to working as it would without AI-Care.
Decisioni AI and Statistiche
In ‘Decisioni AI’ you can see each day's schedule compared with what actually happened, hour by hour, and the list of commands sent to the inverter. In ‘Statistiche’ you can compare your system's production with the production expected for your location.
Frequently asked questions
Will I definitely save money?
It depends on your consumption, the weather and energy prices, which nobody can know in advance with certainty. AI-Care makes its decisions based on forecasts, and forecasts are sometimes wrong. The savings figures you see in the app are estimates.
What happens if the forecasts are wrong?
Every hour the schedule is recalculated with the battery's actual charge and the new forecasts, so errors are corrected as it goes along. It can still happen that, after a morning sale, the sky clouds over more than forecast and a little energy from the grid is needed in the evening.
Why does the battery drop to its minimum in the morning?
That is the sale of the energy left over from the night (step 2 of the day). Shortly afterwards the sun starts to recharge it, and on sunny days the battery is full again by the afternoon.
Why does it sell nothing on some days?
Because there is no surplus energy: the night has used up almost all the battery, or the forecast says the day's sun will not be enough to cover consumption. In those cases AI-Care keeps the energy for the home.
Does AI-Care change the inverter's protections?
No. It only decides how to use the battery: when it supplies the home and when it sells to the grid. The inverter's protections and those required by the grid remain the ones set by your installer.
What data does it use?
Your system's data (production, consumption, battery charge), the weather forecast for your area and public electricity market prices.
Can I switch it off?
Yes. You can suspend it for a few hours or switch it off with the toggle in the ‘Stato AI Care’ tab: in both cases the inverter goes back to working as it would without AI-Care. To withdraw your consent, contact your installer.
Does it work on every system?
You need a battery and a system connected to the electricity grid: AI-Care cannot be activated on off-grid systems. Activation goes through your installer, who checks that the system is suitable.
