What is the current state of sodium-ion technology, and what are the prospects for the coming years?
This is the topic of the speech to be given by our CEO Alessandro Gallani will be held at Solar & Storage Live Italy 2026, entitled “Sodium-ion storage: current status and future prospects”.
The event is on 7 October at 1.30 pm at the Storage Theatre, at Veronafiere.
Sodium and lithium in 2026
The first topic will be a comparison between sodium and lithium, with particular attention to density, cycles and costs.
The aim will be to take stock of the current situation, distinguishing between what is already available on an industrial scale and what is, on the other hand, still at the marketing stage or relates to future prospects.
Security and installability
Another key theme will be that of safety and installability, starting with the chemical properties of sodium ions.
We will be discussing absence of propagating thermal runaway, transport and storage at 0 V, and behaviour at –20°C, to understand what these aspects actually mean in practical terms in terms of fire safety regulations, distances and C&I sites, which are now more difficult to obtain planning permission for.
From €/kWh to €/cycled kWh
There is also a focus on the issue of costs, looking not only at the €/kWh, but also to the €/kWh (cycled).
The comparison will take into account 10,000 cycles and a lifespan of 10–15 years, to understand how the business case changes and in which applications sodium might be a viable option.
Among these, C&I, peak shaving, arbitrage and MACSE, whilst also taking into account situations in which sodium is not necessarily the most suitable solution.
