Storage in Italy: boom in connections in the first half of 2025

Robust growth in the first six months of the year

From January to June 2025, the following were connected in Italy
1,140 MW of new storage systems, an increase in the’8,2 % compared to the 1,054 MW recorded in the same period in 2024.
In parallel, the usable capacity in operation rose to 3,365 MWh, with an increase of 26,5 % compared to the 2,659 MWh beginning of 2024.

Only in June did they come into operation 382 MW of new storage systems larger than 10 MW.
As of 30 June, the total number of active storage systems in Italy rises to about 815.000, for a total power of 6.8 GW.
Of these, 1.7 GW (23 % of the total) belong to utility-scale systems (> 10 MW), while the most widespread power range remains between 6 and 20 kW, with 2.8 GW connected (42 % of the total).

Trend on a quarterly basis and comparison with forecasts

In the first quarter of 2025, new connections were in sharp decline: only 315 MW, with a decrease of 36 % compared to the 491 MW of Q1 2024.
This slowdown was offset by a strong recovery in the second quarter, which led to the positive results for the half year.

The European context: Italy among the protagonists of 2024

A report by SolarPower Europe highlights how Italy was the second largest European market for new storage installations in 2024, with 6 GWh installed, surpassed only by Germany.
In particular, utility-scale installations exceeded the 3.4 GWh, the highest figure ever recorded in Europe for this category.

SolarPower Europe predicts explosive growth on a continental level: cumulative storage capacity is expected to reach 400 GWh by 2029, six times the current levels.
However, according to the “Mission Solar 2040” report, the European Union should aim to 780 GWh by 2030 to ensure an adequate degree of energy flexibility.

Run-up of stand-alone and C&I systems

Data from the first quarter of 2025 show that approximately 40.000 electrochemical storage systems combined with photovoltaic systems, for a capacity of 497 MWh and a power of 266 MW.
In addition, the market for stand-alone storage continues to grow: 6 plants for 138 MWh e 49 MW of power were connected from January to March.

Final considerations

La strong recovery of connections in Q2 2025 suggests a recovery after a sluggish start to the year.
Italy continues to play a leading role in the European accumulation landscape, especially thanks to utility-scale projects.
However, in order to meet the European targets, it will be necessary to regulatory interventions and market reforms.
Growing interest in solutions stand-alone and in the segment Commercial & Industrial indicates a progressive maturation of the market and a diversification of supply.
