Heiwit cited by Il Sole 24 Ore in an article on Lombardy's sodium battery cluster

Dec 12, 2025 | General Articles

Il Sole 24 Ore today devotes considerable space to the development of sodium-ion technology in Lombardy, also citing Heiwit among the players in this strategic sector.

In the article “Start-ups, research centres and university poles: the salt battery hub is born”, journalist Michelangelo Bonessa analyses how a veritable industrial core dedicated to the development of sodium ion technology, destined to flank lithium in segments where safety, sustainability and low costs count, is consolidating in Lombardy.

Heiwit's role

“Heiwit, based in Varese with operations in Caronno Pertusella, is among the most dynamic players,” writes Il Sole 24 Ore, describing the development of this ecosystem.

Note: the newspaper gives Heiwit an annual capacity of 900 MWh. Heiwit's plant in Italy is being prepared: the first phase, with construction expected from 2027, is sized for about 100 MWh a year. These are project targets, not capacity already available.

Our chief executive is quoted in the article explaining the strategic positioning of the technology: “Sodium batteries did not exist in Europe, but in China we found our industrial partner. It is a promising technology for various applications, not for cars but for applications where safety and low costs count, a factor that makes Lombardy position itself as a European benchmark.”

A growing ecosystem

The article highlights how a true innovation ecosystem is forming around Heiwit, with CNR, the Universities of Pavia and Milano-Bicocca, as well as spin-offs such as Ene.sys working on this technology. Lombardy thus confirms itself as “the most advanced Italian territory in the experimentation of alternative solutions to lithium.”

The market context

Il Sole 24 Ore reports that Lombardy has 116,238 storage systems installed for a total capacity of 1,460 MWh, the highest figures in Italy. This fast-growing market represents the ideal ground for the development and affirmation of sodium ion technology.

In the short term, according to the newspaper's analysis, sodium is set to establish itself in segments where stable costs, safety and less dependence on critical raw materials - exactly the strengths of our HEIWIT systems - are central.

Being cited by Italy's leading business newspaper among the companies of this technological transformation fills us with pride and spurs us on to continue on our path of innovation and development.
