In the world of renewable energy, there are moments that mark a before and an after. The installation of the first 10 kWh sodium ion battery in Italy and Europe is one of them. It is not only an achievement for Heiwit, but a strong signal of change for the entire energy storage industry.
The battery is now fully operational at our headquarters in Caronno Pertusella (VA), where it can be visited and seen in operation by appointment. It is a concrete step towards a more sustainable, safe and affordable lithium-free future.
Why sodium?
Lithium has so far been the key element for storage batteries, but it has a number of critical issues: high cost, geopolitical dependence on countries outside Europe, risk of fire and explosion, and difficulty of recycling. The sodium, on the contrary, is abundant in nature.
In addition, sodium batteries are more thermally stable and mechanically safer. Our proprietary Heiwit technology takes full advantage of these features, bringing to the market a state-of-the-art product, entirely designed in Europe.
The technical specifications of the first installation
The installed battery has a nominal capacity of 10 kWh and integrates a 6 kW hybrid inverter which manages both the charging/discharging of the battery and the connection to a photovoltaic system or the grid. It is prepared for the UPS, i.e. it is able to supply power even in the event of a blackout, guaranteeing continuity to the building's essential utilities.
The system is equipped with remote monitoring: each customer can view the battery charge, energy produced, consumed, fed in or withdrawn from the grid in real time, directly from a smartphone or PC.
Le sodium ion cells used are the result of an advanced research process, developed to ensure maximum reliability even in daily charge/discharge cycles. The battery pack is made from 100% recyclable materials, and the whole system is 100% lithium and cobalt-free.
And to give an additional guarantee of quality: 10-year Italian warranty, with direct assistance from our team.
Where to see it in operation
The battery is installed at our premises in Caronno Pertusella (VA), in the province of Varese, and can be viewed by appointment. It is connected to a photovoltaic system and serves as a real domestic storage: not a laboratory test, but a market-ready solution, which proves its effectiveness in the real world every day.
During the visits you can see the system in operation, explore energy monitoring and ask questions to our engineers.
Available for booking
The battery is already available for booking. The first specimens will be delivered within 3 months from the order. Production is started in limited batches to ensure the highest quality at every stage. Each unit is individually tested before shipment.
A step beyond sustainability
The introduction of sodium ion batteries represents a paradigm shift for the industry:
-
Zero lithium, zero cobaltproduction chain is free of rare or critical materials.
-
Total recyclabilityThe materials used can be returned to the production cycle without creating hazardous waste.
-
SecurityThe battery is not subject to risk of fire or explosion, even in the event of damage.
-
European productionless transport-related emissions, more transparency and quality control.
All these aspects make the Heiwit battery not only a technologically advanced choice, but also ethics e sustainable.
Who is it meant for?
The 10 kWh battery is perfect for:
-
Domestic photovoltaic systemsIt optimises self-consumption, reduces dependence on the grid and protects against increases in energy costs.
-
Offices or small businessesIt ensures business continuity even in the event of power outages.
-
Multiple buildings or small apartment blockscan be integrated into local energy communities.
The flexibility of the hybrid inverter and the modularity of the system allow the battery to be adapted to more complex scenarios or future expansions.
Context: why it matters
The installation of this first battery in Europe takes place at a crucial historical moment: the issue of energy independence is increasingly felt, and Europe is looking for solutions to reduce dependence on critical raw materials and non-EU suppliers.
Sodium represents a strategic alternative that could change the rules of the game. Heiwit is among the first in Europe to make it a reality, thanks to an integrated approach that combines research, development and local production.
What happens now?
In the coming months we anticipate:
-
The start of production on a larger scale
-
Obtaining further certifications (in addition to CE and CEI-021 already in place)
-
The introduction of new sizes and formats (including industrial ones)
-
The opening of a network of partner installers throughout Italy
And above all, the arrival of the first batteries in the homes of our customers, who can thus become active participants in the energy transition.
Conclusion
The installation of the first sodium ion battery in Europe is not just technical news, but a symbolic event. It is proof that another way is possible, cleaner, safer, and more suited to the needs of our time.
Heiwit will continue to work every day to bring this technology into all homes and businesses that wish to be a protagonist of change.
