Heiwit starts project for new sodium ion battery factory in Italy: up to 1 GWh capacity

A strategic industrial project officially kicks off on 7 January: a new Italian factory dedicated to the assembly of sodium-ion batteries, designed to scale up production with advanced automation and quality control.

Objective: build a hyper-modern, highly automated plant in Italy by 2026, capable of achieving
a production capacity of up to 1 GWh per year of sodium ion batteries.

Why a factory in Italy

The demand for storage systems is growing rapidly, and the transition to industrial scale requires robust, repeatable and traceable production processes. The new factory was born with a clear objective: scaling up production and further strengthen the supervision of quality, processes and supply chain.

A hyper-modern, automated factory

The project is designed to integrate assembly and testing lines with a high level of automation, with the aim of making production efficient, controlled and scalable. A modern factory is not just “bigger”: it is a system that measures, verifies and improves.

Verification processes along the line, final checks and data collection to ensure consistent standards.

Automation and repeatability

Targeted automation on critical steps to increase accuracy, speed and uniformity of production.

Data and traceability

Batch and component tracking, parameter recording and historicisation for end-to-end control.

Scalability

Factory architecture designed to grow to a potential capacity of 1 GWh per year.

What “1 GWh per year” means”

1 GWh/year is a typical production capacity for an industrial plant: it means being able to assemble and test volumes
important storage systems, 100 thousand 10kWh battery packs, with standardised processes and strict controls. It is a key step towards making the
sodium-ion batteries an increasingly accessible and widespread solution.

Collaboration with EV Safe

Heiwit will tackle this ambitious challenge together with EVsafe, a strategic partner that will contribute its 16 years of experience in the development and industrialisation of solutions for batteries and high-voltage components. EVsafe will participate in the engineering, technical verification and support in the commissioning of production, providing a team of specialists trained in the automation and certification of complex energy systems. The shared path will lead Heiwit one step closer to Made in Italy manufacturing excellence.

The next step

With the official start of the project on 7 January, Heiwit enters a new phase: from industrialisation to scale.
