They work in a similar way and come in different shapes, from traditional cylindrical to rectangular envelopes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During charging, electrons flow from the external circuit to the anode, powered by an energy source such as solar panels. The sodium ions, released from the anode, move through the electrolyte, a conducting medium that allows the ions but not the electrons to pass through, to the cathode. Here, the sodium ions bind, storing energy in chemical form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast, during discharge, electrons flow from the cathode to the anode through the external circuit, supplying electrical devices or the power grid. Sodium ions move in the opposite direction, from the anode to the cathode, releasing stored energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to solar storage, <strong>Sodium-ion batteries have a wide potential for use in various sectors. <\/strong>In the field of electric vehicles, their greater safety and lower costs make them a viable alternative to lithium-ion batteries. For the electricity grid, these batteries can be used for large-scale energy storage, helping to balance energy supply and demand and improving grid stability. In portable electronics, sodium ion batteries also have significant advantages due to their light weight and lower risk of fire, making them ideal for devices such as smartphones and tablets. Finally, these batteries can be used to provide backup power and ensure continuity of service for critical systems in the event of power outages, making them particularly useful for backup applications and UPS systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why use sodium ion batteries?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sodium-ion batteries have several advantages over conventional lithium-ion batteries, making them a promising technology for the future. In addition, sodium ion batteries are more sustainable due to the use of abundant materials and a less complex manufacturing process, making them a more environmentally friendly choice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sodium ion batteries also offer better operation in extreme conditions, tolerating higher and lower temperatures than lithium ion batteries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, there are also some disadvantages. The energy density of sodium-ion batteries is lower: for the same storage capacity, these batteries occupy a larger volume than lithium-ion batteries. This may limit their application in confined spaces. Furthermore, sodium-ion battery technology is still being developed and perfected. Further efforts are needed to improve their performance and durability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, lithium ion batteries have a proven track record in solar storage, while sodium ion batteries are still relatively new in this field. Currently, the widespread adoption of these batteries is limited, but their future potential is significant.
